Debian is a very mature Linux distribution. It’s widely used for both as a server and desktop operating system. A lot of other Linux distributions are based on Debian including: Ubuntu, MEPIS, Dreamlinux, Damn Small Linux, Xandros, Knoppix, Linspire, sidux, Kanotix, and LinEx and others.

Debian is being developed by more than 1000 volunteers around the world, it’s supported by donations via SPI ( non-profit organization for free software projects). Debian has over 18000 software packages which ensures great availability and ease in configuration. Installing packages is easy using the APT command front-end to dpkg, it simplifies configuration, resolving dependencies and installation either from binary package or compiling from source code.

Every Debian software package has its maintainer who keeps track of releases and makes sure the package is compliant with the Debian policy which ensures quality of software packages and security.

Debian has very little hardware requirements, it can run on a system with only 64MB RAM and 200MB disk space at minimum. That makes Debian a great Linux distribution to be run on a VPS server. Of course these requirements increase when you run services such as apache, mysql etc. Our Debian OS image is minimal, only ssh and syslog are running upon install, which enables you to tweak your system as you wish and knowledge of which services are running which adds a great deal to security.

Debian is easy to manage, secure, friendly, fast and package rich Linux distribution. There are millions of tutorials about server management with Debian on the internet.
